The Hotel Danieli welcomes guests to a masterfully restored 14th century palace bejeweled with Murano glass chandeliers, ornately carved marble columns, and soaring ceilings clad with golden leaves. The Hotel Imperial in Vienna, built in 1863 as a residence for the Prince of Württemberg, features pristine marble, hand-carved statues, and spectacular crystal chandeliers. Guests can retreat to the Convento do Espinheiro in the historic city of Evora, Portugal, a former convent built in the 15th century, now a lavish hotel known for its highly acclaimed butler service.
The Luxury Collection traces its heritage to Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi (CIGA), founded in 1906, owner of some of Italy's most renowned luxury hotels, including the Hotel Danieli in Venice, the Grand Hotel in Florence and The Excelsior in Rome. In 1985, Prince Karim Aga Khan acquired a controlling interest in CIGA and began to expand the company's luxury hotel portfolio beyond Italy, most notably with purchases in Spain and Austria. CIGA later expanded in geographic focus to include legendary properties in Sardinia, including Hotel Cala di Volpe, Hotel Pitrizza and Hotel Romazzino. In 1994, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. acquired CIGA and created The Luxury Collection designed to be the world's most renowned assemblage of hotels and resorts.
Today the collection continues to grow. The newest additions include the Marqués de Riscal in Rioja, Hotel Mystique on the beautiful island of Santorini and the masterfully restored US GRANT in San Diego. |
